About The Book
I know it sounds kind of corny, but I have a passion for the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania—and I’ve had this passion for as long as I can remember.
Over the course of the past year, I have traveled throughout our Commonwealth to meet with 21 Pennsylvanians to talk with them about their lives and their hopes for the future. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and represent a wide variety of life experiences.
While serving in Governor Tom Ridge’s administration, and for the past five years as a member of the State Senate, I have spent over 10 years in the public arena of ideas. I have spent time in every part of our Commonwealth. I have met and listened to the stories of countless Pennsylvanians. In a very real sense, their stories can serve as a roadmap for our collective future as citizens of this Commonwealth.
This much is clear: the opportunities for our Commonwealth in this new century lie within in its people. These are folks that rarely pay attention to their state government. They are busy tending to the needs of their own families, jobs, and communities and don’t have the time to immerse themselves in the nuances of public policy or the patience to endure endless rounds of political posturing. But they do expect their government and their public servants to work for them with integrity, vision, and a commitment to excellence. And they do expect to be heard.
In Talking Pennsylvania: 21 Conversations for the 21st Century, I have tried to recount every story while adding my own observations about how our state government can help the people of Pennsylvania build a better 21st Century. I hope that those observations might serve as a “spark” to an ongoing and important discussion about the future of Pennsylvania. Time and space only allow for me to share with you 21 stories. There are so many more stories to be told and heard.
For now, I hope that you draw the same thoughtful inspiration and perspective as I did from these 21 outstanding Pennsylvanians. It’s time that we all begin “Talking Pennsylvania.”
